My pet has been receiving yearly vaccine boosters. Why are you recommending every 3 years?
Vaccines have improved and more studies have been done to determine "Duration of Immunity" of these vaccines. It has been shown that immunity to some diseases lasts much longer than what was previously thought. Therefore some vaccines may be given less frequently, while others still need to be boostered yearly.
Are you the only clinic that is recommending this new schedule?
No. Every Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the United States is recommending it. Also, The American Animal Hospital Association has recently issued every 3 year guidelines for canine core vaccines, and The American Association of Feline Practitioners has issued 3 year guidelines for feline core vaccines. Most Veterinary Clinics are gradually changing as well.
Why are you giving core distemper vaccines for free?
We hope that by placing less emphasis on vaccination we can concentrate on earlier detection of chronic health problems that may cause your pet discomfort and /or shorten his of her life. Our program includes a complete physical examination during which we will assess your pets overall health status. At that time if we find that your dog is due for it's DA2PP it will be given at no charge. There will be a charge for any other vaccine that is given.
Do I still need to bring my pet in every year?
Yes. Yearly physical examinations are the most important thing you can do for your pet. We will ask you questions regarrding your pets activity and discuss any changes in their behavior or habits. A complete physical examination will be done and we will then discuss our findings with you in detail. If any further testing or treatments are needed, we will inform you of the benefits, risks and costs.
What if I still want my pet to receive it's core vaccinations every year?
If, after you have received all the information, you decide you still want your pet to receive yearly vaccinations, we will respect your decision. Core distemper vaccines will still be given free of charge.
